NEW KTM 990 DUKE

New KTM 990 DUKE

Is KTM making a 990 DUKE? Not making. It’s already made and it will be amazing ..that’s what she said #winkwink

It’s quite astonishing, but a full decade has passed since the KTM 990 Super Duke was last included in the Austrian OEM’s range. Over the years, there have been numerous indications that KTM was working on a new 990 Duke for the 2020s.

During recent test rides, the all-new Duke 990 has been unveiled with a completely revamped front end and a fresh 990cc in-line two-cylinder engine. Notably, the 1290 Super Duke R has also been spotted donning this front mask, and the new 390 Duke shares a similar face, albeit concealed under covers. This strongly suggests that this is indeed the fresh and unified look for the upcoming Duke series.

The fundamental shape of the new mask remains consistent with the previous design, featuring two stacked round LED headlights. It’s reasonable to assume that these lights will once again be accompanied by LED strips serving as daytime running lights, much like their smaller sibling. Nonetheless, whether a transparent lamp mask will be included remains an open question for now.

Design and Equipment Updates: Display and Mirrors

Significant changes have been made to the design and equipment, particularly regarding the display and mirrors. The redesigned display holder introduces some intriguing questions. Is this a temporary solution, or is it the final version? In contrast to previous models, the display now features a more square shape instead of the traditional horizontal layout. Additionally, the distinctive flattened corners that were a hallmark of previous Dukes are conspicuously absent. It’s likely that a display resembling those found in various CFMoto models, a close collaborator with KTM, will be installed in the future. Notably, a small flap on the left side of the bracket suggests the possibility of concealing a USB charging port.

Another noticeable change is the revamped handlebar fittings on the NEW KTM 990 DUKE. The modified 4-way buttons stand out in particular. Their design appears to curve inward towards the center, potentially offering a significant enhancement in usability. This curvature makes it easier for the thumb to access the central buttons, enabling more intuitive selection.

The most prominent distinction apparent in these images is the front headlight and cowling. In contrast to the 2023 890 Duke R, where the headlight and cowl seem to form a single cohesive unit with a sizable central headlight, the NEW KTM 990 DUKE test bike showcases a more understated design, characterized by an angular lattice surrounding a notably smaller headlight. Remarkably, despite its compact size, the LED light exudes a lasting impression of brightness, even in the bright sunlight during the photo shoot. Additionally, the swingarm on the NEW KTM 990 DUKE appears to have undergone revisions when compared to the existing 890 Duke R.

What about Chassis and Fairings?

The fairing, on the other hand, boasts some notable innovations. For instance, the small side fairing adjacent to the tank has undergone a redesign. In contrast, the frame of the NEW KTM 990 DUKE seems to have remained unaltered. Significant adjustments have been made to the swingarm. The latest images reveal that it is no longer fitted with static bars but rather exhibits a sturdier and more solid design.

Is NEW KTM 990 DUKE engine strong?

A pivotal aspect of the NEW KTM 990 DUKE’s redesign undoubtedly revolves around the overhauled in-line twin cylinder engine. There’s word that CFMoto will be responsible for manufacturing this new KTM engine, with the likelihood of using it in their own models.

While the fundamental design and dimensions of the engine remain intact, several substantial modifications have been implemented beneath the surface. Noteworthy changes encompass the cylinder head, the housing, the oil pan, and various covers. A particularly remarkable alteration pertains to the redesign of the oil pan, which has been not only lowered but also repositioned to the side. This shift in location creates space for accommodating the catalytic converter and the exhaust system. Furthermore, the incorporation of a larger oil and water cooler suggests an augmentation in engine performance.

Does NEW KTM 990 DUKE have updated exhaust system?

The NEW KTM 990 DUKE is equipped with a thoroughly revamped exhaust system, featuring a noticeable shift in the manifold design compared to the prior model. The manifolds now exhibit a more pronounced curve before merging into a sizable collector beneath the engine. Furthermore, the rear silencer catches one’s attention for its increased dimensions, even though discerning it in the available images can be somewhat challenging.

What about the design?

The redesign of the rear section of the new NEW KTM 990 DUKE introduces notable alterations. Notably, the traditional rear light has been replaced by indicators that incorporate both rear and brake lights. Nevertheless, the viability of this approach may vary depending on the specific regulations in different markets, as such an integrated solution may not be permitted everywhere. Upon closer inspection, a sensor positioned above the new lighting unit becomes apparent. While it might initially resemble a radar, it remains improbable for this model. A more plausible explanation is that it serves as a sensor for capturing data during test drives.
